Household Names IV - GIRLI

Lazy Oaf

To launch our ‘Household Name’ collection this Spring, Lazy Oaf have handpicked a selection of favourite talents who are doing things differently in their fields; disrupting the norms and going against the grain. From artists to musicians, activists to performers, get a first-hand look into their worlds as we document their creative processes, inspirations and values.

Meet GIRLI aka Milly Toomey, the 21-year-old Londoner making outspoken alt-pop challenging traditional gender labels and stereotypes. Championing girls doing whatever the hell they want and gearing up to release her debut album, we fell for the singer/songwriter/rapper’s trademark pink hair, hyperactive and raucous stage persona and unashamedly catchy sound.

“The name ‘GIRLI’ came from wanting to challenge what feminine meant to me and what it means to be a girl. I was inspired by Debbie Harry from Blondie, who named Blondie after what she used to get cat-called in the street. She took a word that was used to demean her and turned it into a name that was really powerful and strong.”
