Household Names III - Juno Birch

Lazy Oaf
To launch our ‘Household Name’ collection this Spring, Lazy Oaf have handpicked a selection of favourite talents who are doing things differently in their fields; disrupting the norms and going against the grain. From artists to musicians, activists to performers, get a first-hand look into their worlds as we document their creative processes, inspirations and values. Next up is Manchester-based artist Juno Birch.

Juno creates pastel-hued sculptures and drawings of alien-esque women in cat-eye shades and six-inch heels with huge lips, cartoonish breasts, Adam’s apples and stubbly chins. Drawing on her own experience as a transwoman and often feeling artificially gendered and alienated by society, Juno embraces this ‘artificial womanhood’ with pride and humour, also using herself as a canvas to bring her sassy alien beauties to life.

@junobirch

Throughout my life as a Transwoman, I’ve often been quite insecure about being an ‘artificial’ woman, and not being biologically female. But when I got rid of my gender dysphoria, I started to embrace that artificiality with pride and that’s what a lot of my work shows, how it feels to be an alien in a woman’s skin.
