On Shoot: Katie Silvester
Recently during a rare sunny spell which graced Finsbury Park, we hung out with London based photographer Katie Silvester as she shot Hayden, Kesse and Mitchell in a selection of items from our Summer '14 and Garfield collections. We ended up having a chat with Katie to find out a bit more about her creative process and inspirations. Read the full interview and shoot below and check out the short video we made from the day showing Katie in action on our Vimeo page here. Hello hello. I'm Katie Silvester, and I'm originally from the USA but am currently in London. How long have you been taking photos and what initiated your passion for it? My Grandad was the ultimate awkward family photo album creator, so I have been surrounded by photo's all of my life, but I started taking photography seriously when I was 16 and got my own camera. What do you primarily use for shoots? I use my Canon AE-1 with a 50mm 1:1.2, a trusty old hand me down of my Dad's from back in the day. What is it you enjoy about shooting with film? I took photography A-Level, and our tutor insisted we had to shoot on film, develop and process the rolls ourselves. I just love the entire process behind it, and the angry cough the shutter of my rickety old camera makes each time I take a photo. How do you usually plan for a shoot? I normally team up with a pal to style, pick a location and a model, then go exploring and snapping. You won't ever see me draw a story board. What's been one of your favourite shoots to date? That's tough. The shoots I enjoy the most are normally because I fall in love in with the model. I've worked with little Martha Liversedge from Premier Models a few times now, and could just shoot her all day every day. Who's some photographers you admire? There are so many young photographers around these days that are so beyond talented it's really hard to pick. London especially, is full of them. I am obsessed with the work of William Eggleston and people like Erwin Blumenfeld, David Armstrong, Alasdair Mclellan and Ryan Kenny. All time favourite image? Oh lordy. That's almost impossible. But today lets say its this one by my boy William Eggleston.
